La plupart du temps les deux personnages sont saisis par les artistes dans une posture sacrée, un hiératisme voulant montrer Jésus comme Dieu, et sa Mère comme trône de sa Sagesse. Ici tout à l’opposé l’artiste a voulu insister sur la pleine humanité de Jésus en saisissant un instant où le bébé joue avec sa mère et tire sur son voile au point de désarçonner celle-ci dans un sourire bienveillant et complice. Le naturel de la composition est remarquable.
